Having given more than thirty years of success and experience to the turbine control system industry, General Electric is widely renowned as the leader in such technology. Whether currently using the Mark V, Mark VI or the VIe control system, your control cards are the central nervous system behind the very heart of your operations. When setting up a new system, some factors are key.
What is required of your turbine controls? Can you shut down your entire Speedtronic system for repairs and maintenance, or do you require constant up-time? A less expensive SIMPLEX control system may serve your purpose well as long as all components are functioning normally; however, if any major component malfunctions, you may be facing a complete system shutdown until the necessary repairs are made. In cases where you can not afford a full blown cessation, a dual or triple redundant control system will be more suitable. This would allow the system to continue operating while repairs are performed or replacement of the faulty GE Mark VI control cards, or any of its predecessor controls, are completed.
Another vital factor is whether or not the company providing your control system offers the type of service and support you need after your purchase is complete. You may have a team of in-house programmers and service technicians; if so, this aspect may not be as important to you. Keep in mind, though, you will need replacement components from time to time. Be completely assured your supplier is able to send you any replacement parts when you need them.
If do not have your own support team, you need a guarantee your supplier can send out their own highly experienced team right away to take care of any problems you may have. Either way, after you purchase a Mark VI control system, you need to be sure the supplier can either ship you the appropriate IS200 replacement components or send a team of specialists who will have the right items.
Most experts insist cost should be the least important deciding factor regarding your turbine control system. Saving money on the control system means nothing if it is unreliable and replacement parts or field support teams are never available when needed. An initial cost reduction is also fruitless if you lose production due to a system that can not fully serve your purpose.
